How to buy wholesale fabric

Buying fabric as a new designer or business owner can be challenging if you don't know the ins and outs of sourcing fabric from suppliers. Fret not, here are some quick tips to get you started:

  • Finding the right supplier for your need — If you are running a production house try avoiding retail fabric stores, they typically have only a limited supply of each fabric, and they likely won't meet your demand needs when you go into full production. Instead, you need to find a wholesale supplier who can provide you the quantity of fabric you needs.
  • Understand the diversity of suppliers — It’s important to understand the diversity of fabric suppliers in the industry. Some have readily available fabric as soon as you need it. Some will make it to order just for you. Others, called jobbers, only have leftover materials typically form the manufacturers. So pick one that suits your need.
  • Know the amount of fabric you need — All types of wholesale suppliers usually have minimum orders requirement, so be sure to work with a one who meets your production needs. You never want too much or too little product; it may take some trial and error to learn the right amount.

Where to buy wholesale fabric

There are plenty of ways to can source wholesale fabric. If you are a beginner, you have these options to start with:

Google

Google is a quick and easy way to get started searching for wholesale fabric suppliers near you. A simple query like "buy wholesale fabric" should returns hundreds if not thousands of results for you to choose from.

Keep in mind, however, that these suppliers recommended are not vetted so it's up to you to do the homework and sniff out the genuine suppliers from the scams.

Source from manufacturer

If you're trying to source fabric at the lowest cost possible and can afford to order larger quantities, you might want to consider going straight to the source (i.e the manufacturer). If you order enough quantity you can always negotiate better deals to improve overall cost.

However, a manufacturer's contact may be hard to obtain if you do not know where to look for. Plus, most manufacturers would prefer to deal with sellers who have a reputation of selling large quantities, so keep that in mind.

Supplier directories

Supplier directories, like SaleHoo, vet their suppliers/manufacturers. This means you won't need to worry about finding high-quality suppliers or getting scammed. You would also get all details about them: including the years they have been in operations, contacts, shipping information, product catalog etc.

While there is a small fee ($67/year for SaleHoo), it's the best method for beginners. We even give you our market research tool, which shows you how often items sell and helps you find new products to add to your store!

Finding trusted suppliers

To avoid scams and find true wholesalers, follow this 4-step verification process

Contact the supplier and verify their address

Never order from a wholesaler without talking to them on the phone. For added insurance, Google their address and make sure it’s not a house or PO box (or a fake).

Check your supplier’s reputation and track record

Only do business with suppliers with a long history (10+ years) in business. Call their past customers to get honest reviews of their service.

Purchase and inspect their products

Order a sample before making a bulk purchase. Inspect them for product quality, proper packaging, and fast shipping speeds.

Test their customer support

Call a new supplier with questions as often as you can. If their support sucks, it will hurt your own customer service as well.
